Halifax Pop Explosion & United Way Present: Songs Of The City with HUA LI 化力, KIM HARRIS, LEANNE HOFFMAN, WOLF CASTLE & YOHVN BLVCK at Spatz Theatre (Halifax) - Wed Oct 23 2019 at 6:30 pm
Presented by United Way Halifax and Atlantic Lottery, in partnership with Halifax Pop Explosion and Forward Music Group, Songs of the City is a memorable evening of stories and song. Five storytellers who have been impacted by the work of United Way Halifax are paired with a local songwriter who will perform an original song based on the storyteller’s strength and resilience.
Hua Li 化力 is the unapologetic alter-ego of multi-disciplinary performing artist Peggy Hogan. Hua Li’s unique vision of neo-soul, hip-hop, jazz sophistication and electronic glitz meet for beguiling melodies over potent grooves.
Kim Harris' lush emotionally driven alternative pop is rich deep and moving. Her debut album was named Rising Star Recording of the Year at the 2015 East Coast Music Awards, and she has been hailed by CBC Music as “The mightiest voice coming out of the East Coast.
Leanne Hoffman’s work is a tribute to the magic of songwriting. The Halifax based singer-songwriter can lift words off a page and hearts out of their chests. It is the pursuit of that magical pairing of lyrics and melody that lead her to create songs that are impossible to ignore.
Raised on the Rez and the internet, this rapper has a versatile style mixing the old and the new with a flavor for grand theatricality and introspection. A highly energetic performer with impeccable skill, his lyrics and flow are second to none.
Yohvn Blvck, an Antiguan now based in Halifax, explores emotion and vulnerability with his unique hip-hop/R&B style. His performances feature personal topics including love, torment, and substance abuse. Despite the gritty, dark nature of his writing, his music is passionate and his performances dynamic.
